By applying the license key on the Surveillance Station user interface, you will be able to set up and manage more cameras on the network.

By default, two camera licenses are installed. Synology Camera License Packs are designed for expanding cameras setup on the Synology Surveillance Station. So does this mean for those of us who already have a Synology NAS and would like more DS Cam license that this rare discount on it from Amazon. The Synology one-camera license pack allows you to add one camera to the Synology Surveillance station. QNAP (their main competitor) also charges and they price is pretty much the same.

You just use the option, if you already have a synology for file system storage anyhow, instead of buying more dedicated hardware/software (a separate PC running 24/7 with Blue Iris for example).īTW: Synology is not the only one who charges camera license fees. You don't buy a synology FOR the camera surveillance option. YEs they charge for additional cameras (are they pricier than they should be - I think we all agree, YES). They offer a package for camera surveillance, and give you 2 camera licenses included to use it out of the box. And there are no extra fees to use it for storage. Keep in mind, when you buy a synology you are buying a NAS for storage. Obviously not as pretty or convenient, and all the AI (motion triggers, etc.) needs to be done by the camera.ĭS Cam is an optional feature. You can connect to your cameras directly and manage them like that. Camera sees your share and records it's files directly on the share storage. If your camera (like most decent IP cams), can record directly to a network file share, then there is no reason to pay anything if you don't need the DS Cam interface.

Also, keep in mind the fee is a one time fee, not a subscription like current cloud offerings. There are 2 camera licenses included, and that is ONLY to integrate them to their Camera Surveillance package.

You don't have to pay to record on your own server. It is ridiculous to have to pay to record on your own server. I am glad not to have any of this Synology.

Now, if 1080p cameras is all you want/need, or motion activated only recording, then that is not usually an issue.

Expect to pay $500 to $700 on a decent NVR to handle multiple hi resolution cameras. Just pointing out that today, $250 for an NVR is not going to cut it for many cases (especially for high resolution and 24/7 recording). I'd rather pay a little more and have no subscriptions, keeping things local, and no dependency on outside services. I am not a cloud kind of guy (or subscriptions) when it comes to these things. Not disagreeing with you that going local over cloud is better (at least in my opinion - and yours obviously). If you factor the cost of cloud storage over 5 years, I think I made a wise choice. It’s not cheap, but I have had this system for 5 years now. This gives me roughly 30 days of recording (motion activated) and I have 9 cameras. I added two WD purple drives for an additional 400$. I spent 250$ for my recorder and that was before hard drives. … but how often do you watch your surveillance video?
